If I am not for myself, who is for me?

Cameron from Los Angeles came to us with a text and placement he had been thinking of for years. This would be his first tattoo, and he already knew he wanted Pirkei Avot 1:14 placed vertically from his chest toward his solar plexus.

If I am not for myself, who is for me?
And when I am only for myself, what am I?
And if not now, when?

At the time, Cameron was preparing to leave his work as a consultant and turn fully toward music, a passion he had for a long time. The verse became a way to mark that transition. For him, the first line spoke to self belief and responsibility. The last line spoke to urgency, to the need to act now.

The process deepened around the middle line. When asked how he understood โ€œwhen I am only for myself, what am I,โ€ Cameron connected it to the kind of musician he wanted to become. He was not only seeking his own success. As a producer, he wanted to help other artists express themselves, and through that work of supporting others, continue discovering and refining his own voice.

Gabriel connected personally to that moment of change. Having left a former career in music to follow calligraphy, he understood the feeling of stepping out of one life and into another. He described it as creating more space, more air to breathe, like taking off heavy boots after a long day.

The piece kept Cameronโ€™s vertical direction, centered on the body. But instead of remaining a single strict line, it begins to open around the chest. Not as a literal flower, but with the feeling of blooming, unfolding, and making room.

For Cameron, this piece became a marker of self trust, service, and timing. A reminder that the life he wanted to build had to begin now.
